Paul Merson claims Rafa Benitez was hard done by

“He was very much right to be annoyed. The penalty was a homer. If you give them, you’d give 10 a game the way defenders defend these days. And the other one was when DeAndre Yedlin went down the right and he went to cross the ball and Daniels gets there late and if it’s anywhere else on the pitch it’s a free-kick. He played the ball and he was caught. It should have been a penalty and that’s what Rafa Benitez is talking about.

“It ebbed and flowed. Newcastle started off really well and then Bournemouth had their stage in the game. Newcastle were a big threat in the first half, they had the wind on their backs. Bournemouth started the second half well and it was a home penalty. Paul Dummett then made an absolutely brilliant clearance off the line and goalline technology is great, isn’t it? I thought he’d given the goal but it was actually for a foul further back. Right at the death, Ritchie half volleys it with unbelievable technique. 2-2 was probably a fair result – it sends the Newcastle fans home, they’d come a long way and it looked like they’d sold all of their tickets out once again, happy. They went ballistic.”
