Jamaal Lascelles delighted to prove critics wrong

“They came here and everybody thought they’d beat us. But we stuck to our game plan and the manager got his tactics spot on. From the start of the game until the end we were on the front-foot, we were aggressive and winning all the second balls. Individually and collectively we were at it from the start.

“They changed the way they were playing by the end. For the majority of the game they were trying to play through us, balls in behind, and one-twos. Because we scored the goal they ended up just lumping it forward. I thought our back four were excellent at clearing and the midfield were there to win the second balls. Everybody was fantastic and our goalkeeper kept us in it from the start. It is a massive three points but now we need to keep on building on it in the next few weeks.

“Darlow has been fantastic for us in the last couple of games and he has kept us in it and got points. The manager has put in a new goalkeeper and in all fairness he was ready. Martin was talking his way through the game and he was a confident keeper. It’s a great way for him to make his debut. The rest of us can’t thank him enough for the saves that he made.

"A few times this season we have been 1-0 up and conceded right at the end. It’s like everybody dropped their heads but we managed to stick it out by the end. We got the three points and showed a lot of character. It’s a huge three points and now the next two games are massive for us. Bournemouth and Southampton are two games we need to prepare for and work out how we will beat them. They’re games we need to win. We’re in a great position now but it is still tight and we must take things step by step. I am sure the manager will have more tactics for us going forward.”
