Unrealistic Cavani & Coutinho Links

Newcastle United have always been subject to news headlines and especially speculation. Whether that's ownership, or in this case, potential signings. Since news broke of the Amanda Staveley led consortium edging closer to completing a deal for the Magpies, the transfer rumour mill has been working flat out. With links to Gareth Bale reported by the Sunderland Echo or, according to Mundo Deportivo, our reported interest in Philippe Coutinho. Most of us, I'm sure, will agree that Newcastle United will have to take baby steps to progress and achieve the alleged lofty ambitions of the prospective owners. Signings of this nature are very unrealistic, making little sense in terms of longevity and financial fair play. Today, we wake up to spurious links to Edinson Cavani - the 33 year old PSG hitman. Edging closer to the end of his contract, some of Europe's giants of the game are sniffing around Cavani. Foot Mercato claim that not only are Newcastle interested in Cavani on a Bosman transfer, but they are also trying to outbid Manchester United for the highly-rated Napoli Defender, Kalidou Koulibaly. Complete rubbish, in my opinion, although I'd not be sad to be proven wrong. Perhaps it could be true and he could be viewed as our Vincent Kompany? Unlikely. Under Mike Ashley our image or 'brand' has been damaged drastically and this has, and will for a while, affect our ability to attract top talents. Since the rise of Man City and sharing the city with the globally renowned Man United, the idea of players being put off living in the North has less foundation. We do have to offer a wonderful fanbase, city, stadium and a rich history, which some say are the characteristics of a sleeping giant. However, even with that considered, we'll struggle to poach the top talents, especially those with greater ambitions than a fat pay cheque.

Regarding the takeover progress, and the imminent signing of Messi and Co, the cans are still on ice for me.
