The Week For Newcastle United 10

A Brilliant week for Newcastle across the board with two wins for the 1st team, the under 18s back to winning ways in the league and the Under 21s finally picking up their 1st league win of the season.

A Late winner for the Under 18s to keep up their Solid start to the Season

ree

Saturday started with the U18s ending their short 2 game losing streak with victory over Nottingham Forest. Newcastle led through Jude Cogdon on 38 Minutes and as the minutes dwindled down it looked like a solid 1-0 was on the card as my notifications went quiet. Then in the 1st minute of Stoppage time Forest pulled back an equaliser, and it looked like the young mags would be on the end of another gut punching result but 3 minutes later O’Donovan netted the winner to take the 3 points. The under 18s are at home to Everton this Saturday who sit above us by 1 goal in the league level on points.

A much-needed Premier League win

ree

Thoughts then turned to the Premier League and the visit of Fulham. We secured the win thanks to a late winner from Bruno after what seemed to be a frustrating afternoon that could have resulted in yet more dropped points. The result was very much in the category of I don’t care how it comes we had to win. With 3 home games in a week in 3 different competitions it feels like a big week in the context of the season especially as we have 2 away games coming up in the premier league where there will be an expectation, we should be picking up results especially against a poor West Ham side.

The Under 21s win

ree

Finally, Newcastle Under 21s have picked up their 1st league win of the season and based on the games I have been able to watch live (Well on Tele) A solid 2-0 win on Monday away at Crystal Palace. Anthony Munda took the lead for us in the 20th minute with an assist from Park Seung-Soo and the victory was sealed just past the hour when Joe Brayson scored with an assist from Sean Neave. Despite the indifferent season that the under 21s have had Sean Neave has scored 7 Goals and 2 assists in all competitions.

We next travel to Ipswich this Friday for the 1st part of an Ipswich Vs Newcastle double this weekend. A result here would be a big statement as Ipswich currently sit 2nd in Premier League 2 unbeaten in 7 games with 6 wins.

The League Cup is Ours. Take it if you can

A solid no drama performance and result completed the perfect week at St James Park with our 3rd win in days. Eddie Howe made 8 changes, but we were comfortably the better side for most of the game. Ramsdale did have to make some decent saves as well but it was a comfortable nights viewing. Spurs for their part were poor and offered very little throughout the game. There were complaints around our 1st goal but need to look at their own defending and lack of concentration and when Woltemade scored the 2nd I felt the game was won. It also shows the squad depth we have within the squad and that’s with Hall, Tino and Wissa all still to come back as well.

The only negative for me on the night was Elanga who continues to struggle in a Newcastle shirt. He does have quality, and his pace can hurt any team at any moment, but he hasn’t displayed it enough and that will be a concern. However, in his defence, the same thing may have been said about Anthony Gordon when he 1st arrived and look what happened there. Eddie Howe and his coaching staff can improve players massively so if his attitude is right then the breakthrough will be there, and we just have to be patient. My only concern is how much he was affected by the summer circus, but he is a professional so would like to think that shouldn’t be a factor now.

The Quarter Final draw was made following the game and we have been drawn at home against Fulham which is a brilliant draw in my opinion. Fulham are a beatable side and even with the fact the game follows the away game at Sunderland if we can make quality changes as we did against Spurs and repeat the level of performance then we have a massive chance of reaching our 3rd Semi Final in 4 seasons.

Lasses News

ree

It is just under three weeks until the Lasses play Sunderland at St James Park, and it was announced that ticket sales have passed the ten thousand mark. The record stands at 38,502 and although we may be hard pressed to break that record it still will be a massive occasion that I am counting down to. The atmosphere is going to be incredible whatever the attendance and with other massive women’s matches being played the same day it will be brilliant to see the Tyne-Wear stack up to those.

In other Lasses news many of the squad featured during the international break. It was a great break for Mannion and Murphy as the Republic of Ireland achieved promotion in the Nations League. McQuade and Wardlow were both called up to Scotland U23s and Wardlaw provided an assist during the break. Loanee Femke Liefing featured in both games for the Netherlands under 21s keeping a clean sheet against Belgium. Oona Sevenius, Freya Gregory, and Lois Joel were also part of the squads for the country.

ree

Sunday sees the first game of the post Becky Langley era as the lasses travel to Colchester to play Ipswich Town women. No game is won on paper, but this is a game I feel we must go and win. I would be very surprised if they are not in the bottom three come May but as Sheffield United has shown us in our last two fixtures against them expecting a win can be dangerous. It will be interesting to see how Claire Ditchburn sets us up and how evident any style changes are in the early stages of the game. Positives must be taken from our last games, not only the Man City game but also the mentality and grit we showed against Palace and Bristol City in the league. I am writing this on Thursday so there is a chance we may get a new manager announcement before the fixture but whomever is in charge Sunday a win here would positively kickstart a potentially crossroads month for the lasses.
