Race For Number One Answered?

Writer: Sam WestSam West

There have been lots of questions in recent weeks regarding Newcastle's long-term goalkeeper position. It has been no secret that in the absence of Martin Dubravka, Karl Darlow has stepped up to the task as the shot-stopper. But many have wondered whether Steve Bruce will capitalise on Darlows from or will Dubravka regain his number one spot.

Darlow has played half of the season and has impressed, to say the least. Without him, Newcastle may have been struggling in the relegation zone coming into 2021, but his safe hands have ensured that the Mags stay in contention to reach the forty points mark to sustain Premier League status in the 2021/2022 season.

Speaking with SkySports News reporter Keith Downie. When asked is the number one Jersey his (Karl Darlows) to lose. Bruce Commented:

"Well I'm in a fortunate position now with two excellent Goalkeepers and one has just come back fit, who's just won player of the year last year. So Karl has waited patiently for his chance because of the form of Dubravka. But he's the number one at the moment because of the performances he's putting in. So I'm in a really, really healthy position as a manager to have two, three, very, very good Goalkeepers".

Based on Steve Bruce's comments it is safe to suggest that Darlow will remain in goal when Newcastle take on Leicester in their Sunday afternoon tie at St James Park. I would imagine Dubravka will get a chance to feature in the FA Cup match against Arsenal. Since Bruce stated that Darlow is number one at the moment, it is unlikely that Darlow nor Gillespie will be chosen ahead of Dubravka in the remaining cup games as the Slovakian seeks to retain his position as Number one by more than just the jersey.
