Newcastle United 1-3 Everton | Match Report

While Newcastle cannot qualify, this fixture is about pride and progress. Everton, despite inconsistent form, remain favourites due to their WSL pedigree. There is no doubt The Lasses will want to impress in front of the newly appointed manager in Tanya Oxtoby, who was watching on in the fancy seats as Claire Ditchburn took charge of her last game as interim manager.

At the half-hour mark, Everton struck first, they were awarded a free-kick just outside the box, Yuka Momiki stepped up and delivered a moment of brilliance. From the edge of the area, she curled a stunning effort beyond goalkeeper Grace Moan. It was a strike of pure quality—Moan had no chance of keeping it out. The goal gave Everton confidence, and they pushed forward in search of a second, though Newcastle held firm to prevent further damage before the break.

51 mins: Newcastle were nearly undone when Cataldo lost possession deep in her own half. Grace Moan produced a sharp close-range save to deny Toni Payne, and Louise Mannion followed up with a crucial block to prevent Yuka Momiki from doubling Everton’s lead. Jordan Nobbs tried her luck from distance, drilling a powerful effort on target, but Courtney Brosnan was equal to it at her near post.

Moan pulled off the save of the match, somehow tipping Payne’s point-blank header onto the crossbar. It was a world-class stop that kept Newcastle in contention. Everton finally broke through again. Katja Snoeijs capitalised after Grec lost her marker, slotting home a simple tap-in to make it 2–0. Just a minute later, Payne got her reward. A misjudgment from Moan gifted Everton their third, and Payne made no mistake to put the visitors firmly in control.

Newcastle refused to fold. From a corner, Beth Lumsden bundled the ball over the line to give the Magpies hope and spark the home crowd. Lumsden nearly had a dramatic second, breaking clear one-on-one, but Brosnan stood tall to deny her. It was a golden chance that went begging.

A special moment for Newcastle as U21 player Amelia Freeman made her senior debut, with her proud mother watching from the stands.
