The case for Dwight Gayle

Gayle has to be knocking on the door for a start. Picture courtesy of Ninetyminutes.

I never thought after his loan move to West Brom I'd be arguing the case for Dwight Gayle..... But here we go!

Steve Bruce has spoken about wanting to buy him 3 separate times over the course of his career. So there is little doubt that he highly rates the former Crystal Palace striker. However, the frontman has only been getting a few minutes here and there.

It may appear controversial but I think Gayle needs to start Thursday night in Sheffield. Here's my reasons why:

Joelinton is not doing enough to warrant a start - I feel for him in a way because he has been asked to play out of his preferred position. Joelinton reminds me a lot of Ayoze Perez in the sense that he is very good technically and, in my opinion, will be good playing off the striker. He could perhaps challenge for Almiron's position but, as a lone striker, I do not think his style of play suits this. Gayle can lead the line on his own and has experience in that department.

Linking up with Alain Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron - I think with the way Gayle operates, he suits Almiron and Saint-Maximin to a tee. On the break they're deadly. Gayle is brilliant at finding that extra yard of space in the six-yard box. He would definitely get chances. He is also excellent at stretching defences as well which Joelinton does not do enough of as his traits do not suit his position in this team.

I know it can be argued that the former number nine has struggled at the highest level after succeeding in the Championship on a number of occasions. However, to conclude, I think Gayle, unlike Joelinton, would do better than one goal in 13 matches.

Give Gayle the chance, Bruce!
