Steve Bruce hopes Newcastle aren't finished in the market

"It's still quite unbelievable that I am stood here as the manager of this great football club. I turned them down once before a long time ago and with this opportunity I was totally selfish and I understand that. I've upset a lot of people in Sheffield and I can understand that too but the opportunity to manage my hometown club was something which this time I couldn't let go. I'll do my utmost to take the club forward. I'm hoping that we can have a little bit of time. Whoever comes in was going to have difficult shoes to fill. I've said to the supporters give me a chance and judge me on what you see. They are a passionate bunch and I hope I can give them something to shout about.

"We are still hopeful that we have one or two things up our sleeve. I hope we are not finished. We will know a little bit more in the next 24 hours. I would envisage we still have one or two bits still to do. A long time ago I played with three at the back at Crystal Palace and with Hull. It certainly suits a sort of style of player which helps everyone concerned. To win matches, though, you are only as good as what you have got up front and I certainly feel that we have got that threat.

"We know it is going to be tough. Their forward line is as good as you're going to get around Europe or even the world. They are going to be a force. I hope we can make it difficult for them and get a full house at St James' Park. Every supporter will agree it will be difficult to win the Premier League. If you get a good draw, though, I've seen how far you can get in the cups from my time with Hull. The most important thing for me is to take this club forward."
