With every Newcastle fan across the globe glued to their phones, computers and televisions from the 1st - 31st January for a significant change, it could be a window to remember under the club's new ownership. This was the fist transfer window the PIF, Amanda Staveley and Jamie Reuben have experienced since acquiring the club back in October 2021. There was huge speculation on how much investment would go into the transfers once Mike Ashley was bought out, and the new owners did not disappoint with Newcastle being the biggest spenders across Europe in the month.
However the biggest question was who were Newcastle going to be able to attract during this window with the club currently sitting in the relegation places? Understandably due to the new wealth category the club has entered, Newcastle were linked with most players during the window but it was five sensible individuals who signed the dotted lines. Kieran Trippier, Chirs Wood, Bruno Guimarães, Matt Targett and Dan Burn are the signings the club hope will assist the team in securing Premier League Status this season. Although there will be skeptics out there who believe we could and should have targeted 'bigger names' within the leagues, the majority of fans believe these are very good signings and the perfect signings for the position the club are currently in. January is notorious for being a difficult month to operate in and the club were examples of this during unsuccessful negotiations with players such as Sven Botman, Diego Carlos, Jesse Lingard and Hugo Ekitike. So to bring in these five players who all have good pedigrees and four of those having Premier League experience, the club should be pleased with the business.
Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Matt Targett and Dan Burn are those four players who have the Premier League experience, and will know exactly what to expect in these next critical months. Kieran Trippier who's already been voted by the fans as their player of the month for January, has already been tipped to take the captain's armband if Jamal Lascelles is relieved of his duties in the Summer. Chris Wood is player who just needs the one goal to get him off and running, and his performance in the 1-0 win at Elland Road against Leeds United was a strong one as that vocal point. Matt Targett is a player who is admired for his work rate and ability to get up and down that left flank. His final ball is something that can be utilized with either Wood or Wilson operating the no.9 position. Dan Burn is a consistent and versatile defender who can play at both centre-back and left-back. Returning to the North-East also, the man from Blyth will be eager to prove his ability in the black and white. The fifth addition to the squad who doesn't have the Premier League experience is Brazilian International Bruno Guimarães. Only 24 years old he's gained a positive reputation in both South America and France for his box-to-box ability. He's a player the faithful will be very excited to watch this season.
Newcastle's next two fixtures are at home against Everton and Aston Villa, and with these new signings Eddie and the team will be looking to target six points from these games giving Newcastle a great platform to beat the drop.
