On the road again - 2011/12 season

I continue to look through the years looking at Newcastle's away records, we're at the point where we finished 5th in the Premier League, ahead of that season's European champions Chelsea.

Biggest win: West Brom 1-3 Newcastle

A quite simply brilliant and exciting brand of football played in the first half saw Newcastle possess a three-goal advantage at half-time. New signing Papiss Cisse continued his goal-scoring prowess when he gave the Magpies an early lead. Still early on, Hatem Ben Arfa lead a quick-paced breakaway counter attack before cutting in on his favoured left foot and shot home past Ben Foster right in front of the Newcastle crowd section. Cisse added to the already strong lead before half-time. West Brom attempted to make a comeback in the second half but could only grab one consolation goal following a mistake from Mike Williamson.

Biggest defeat: Tottenham 5-0 Newcastle

Going into the match, Newcastle hadn't taken anything away from White Hart Lane since 2008. Newcastle may not have been expecting a shock result at Tottenham but few would have expected an absolutely shockingly awful first half display which saw the Toon 4-0 down. With goals from Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Niko Kranjcar and two from Louis Saha, the game seemed all over after 34 minutes. Striker Emmanuel Adebayor added to Newcastle's misery halfway through the second half to make it 5-0.
