Newcastle 2-1 Wigan | Player Ratings

Karl Darlow: 7/10 Made a few important saves and kept United in it at 1-1, good display.

Vurnon Anita: 6/10 Lacked the pace of DeAndre Yedlin and didn't get forward enough. Made sloppy passes out of simple situations but was defensively tidy and played an important part in Ritchie's goal.

Grant Hanley: 6.5/10 Nothing to write home about but was integral in grinding out the 2-1 win.

Jamaal Lascelles: 6/10 Won Aerial duels and fought well. For a captain, the team didn't look overly confident, a concern for definite. Was turned inside out by Jacobs for the equaliser.

Paul Dummett: 6.5/10 Epitomised his defensive full back label. Again, defended well but not forward enough.

Matt Ritchie: 7.5/10 Try, try and try again. His goal summarised both his ability and attitude, great performance from the man with the magic hat.

Jonjo Shelvey: 7/10 Dominated the midfield and again was a class act compared to the rest, still not his best showing but proves his quality with ease.

Jack Colback: 6/10 Broke up play well and attempted to go forward more than his usual self. Did the dirty work and allowed Shelvey space, still no world beater in anyone's eyes.

Yoan Gouffran: 6/10 Again worked hard but hasn't shown his creative spark in a while. Atsu a good call for the trip to Hillsborough next Saturday. Replaced by Hayden, 69".

Mo Diame: 7.5/10 Was good to see a hardworking display going forwards and backwards from him. Great assist for Gayles goal, more similar performances needed in the run in. Replaced by Atsu, 62".

Dwight Gayle: 8/10 Link up play was better than previous weeks and got his first home goal of 2017. Back in form for a pivotal run in. Replaced by Perez, 80".

Substitutes (Must play 15+ minutes to register a player rating).

Isaac Hayden: 7/10 A lot tidier than Colback but still puts a good foot in. Will be a great asset to have in the run in.

Christian Atsu: 6/10 Was a fresh legs replacement for Diame, electric pace caused a few problems. Bigger involvement over the next few weeks imminent.
