Karl Darlow: 5/10. Made a couple of decent saves to keep United in it but was poor at aerial balls during the game.
Vurnon Anita: 4/10. Outpaced frequently and threw himself into several challenges that were unnecessary. Lacked DeAndre Yedlin's athleticism.
Ciaran Clark: 4/10. Miscommunicated with members of the back line and times and held onto the ball for too long at times, by far not his best performance.
Jamaal Lascelles: 3/10. The epitome of nerves. Struggled to do the basics and gave away avoidable throw ins and corners, Lacklustre performance.
Paul Dummett: 5/10. Consistent, but nothing to scream about. Won aerial battles but was outpaced by Odoi and Aluko in spells, poor in comparison to the Paul Dummett we've seen in games this season. Gave away a poor penalty.
Christian Atsu: 4/10. Pace wasn't used effectively and didn't get in behind enough as he should have. Frustrating and overall, not good enough.
Jonjo Shelvey: 4/10. One of the only times this season he wasn't the best midfielders on the pitch, Johansen man marked and angered him until he lost his head, Cairney did the creative work and proved his quality with a goal.
Jack Colback: 4/10. One of his better games, yet still a poor rating. Undisciplined, unready and undeservedly still wearing the shirt. Made the odd successful pass and tackle but simply not good enough. Strangely avoided a booking.
Matt Ritchie: 5/10.
Still workmanlike but lacked a spark going forward and final ball was poor throughout the game, polar opposite to the last few games and performances from him.
Mo Diame: 3/10.
Felt tired watching him, perfect display on why he shouldn't have been bought in the first place. Poor mans Sissoko.
Dwight Gayle: 5/10.
Tried, tried again and tried again, nothing came of it. Would have expected more from him against a high lined defence, but was feeding from poor service. Failed to win Aerial battles as long ball was idiotically played to him for most of the afternoon.
Substitutes:
Daryl Murphy (On for Diame 59"): 7/10 Got a goal and pulled Newcastle 20-30 yards further up the pitch through winning knock ons and various headers. A likely starter for next weeks trip to St Andrews, where he already has 1 goal this season.
Jesus Gamez (On for Clark 64"): 5/10 Attempted to be attacking when put on at full back but the game was long gone, good mentality shown by the Spaniard. Showed why he was 3rd choice but gave a mediocre account of himself.
Yoan Gouffran (On for Gayle 74"): 3/10 Almost forgot he came on. Made virtually no impact and didn't seem to try to neither.
